In the Shimmering

Driving tonight, windows down,
something fluttered inside my shirt,
between my breasts. I didn't find anything
as I checked in and out of my shirt and bra

then forgot all about it
when I went shopping in the mall,
though it scared me to think some bug
had gotten in, checking me out.

But when I came home
and took off my clothes, I saw
between my breasts a butterfly
shaped dark brown smear and

inside my bra, the silver shimmering
soul of a moth had remained. How perfect
to leave the world like that--a shimmer
and a smear next to someone's heart.
